| Other Local CSAs and Good Food Sources |
We find it hard to turn people away in May after we have already filled up our allotment of shares for the season. We do, however, have some great suggestions of other local places to get good food. There are some terrific CSAs in the area, as well as local farmers' markets. I have not checked to be sure that all the listed CSAs still have shares. Dietz Produce: At York Central Market House on T, Th, and Sat, 8-2, year-round. You can buy Dave Dietz's delicious, fresh, chemical-free produce in season, and other fair trade and organic produce as well. He sells local artisan cheeses, rBST-free milk (including raw milk), and fair trade bananas, coffee and chocolate. This is one of Ellis' favorite trips each week, to go to market and see Dave and Myron Dietz. Email them at dietzfarm@gofairtrade.com. Dig It! Community Garden: They have a CSA this year! Email the farm manager Ben Weiss at bazzrad@yahoo.com to sign on. Call at 717-481-8734. This is a wonderful community-oriented urban project. Eastern Market: Please visit all the local farmers' markets. We're especially excited about Lancaster's Eastern Market right now, and their commitment to making fresh, local, healthy veggies available. It's open Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Check them out at www.historiceastside.org and visit them at 308 E. King St. in Lancaster. Spoutwood Farm: For Yorkie folks who live within hopping distance of 83, the drive south to Glen Rock isn't too daunting. Contact them at spoutwood@supernet.net or 717-235-6610. Prescott's Patch: Another great local CSA, and they've got great strawberries at their Bainbridge stand even if you don't get a share! Email at sprescott@paonline.com or call 717-367-2010. Goodwill at Homefields: This is a Goodwill project that gives an opportunity for developmentally disabled people to work outside, and it's a CSA. Email scottb@lancastergoodwill.org or call 717-871-3110. Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative: These folks have a CSA as well as other available produce and meat and dairy products. Call 717-786-5424. See them online at www.lancasterfarmfresh.com. Find a copy of the Lancaster/York Green Pages published by the Susquehanna Sustainable Business Network: it's packed with lots of other good food and product and service options from local businesses with a commitment to sustainability and fair trade business. Check out www.susquehannasbn.org for more information about SSBN and the Green Pages. |
